CHANDIGARH: The Dig Punjab police said that 2,257 militants were presently detained in various jails in the state with the maximum 665 being at Amritsar followed by 320 at Ferozepur, 236 at Nabha, 213 at Jalandhar and 211 at Sangrur jails,
Gill said to date only one militant had been convicted in an arms case. Out of the 9, 414 arrested in the three years period from 1986 to 1988, majority of them had either been released on bail or set free.
He said the militants arrested during “operation black thunder” from the Golden Temple complex at the holy city of Amritsar in June, were being Charge sheeted on an individual basis.
Gill said a number of top militants had either been killed, including Surinder Bawa, Balbir Singh Harmel Singh alias Riberio, or arrested including Atinder Pal Singh and Surinder Singh alias Chhinda.
He said Pro-Khalistani groups were recruiting people and regrouping them in view of the pressure by security forces.
