CHANDIGARH India: The Sangrur District Bar (Association has called upon lawyers throughout the State of Punjab and Haryana to observe July 29 as day of strike in protest against B.S.F. preventing a lawyer from meeting his client and illegally detaining the lawyer for several hours. Ina signed statement issued here, Mr. Ram Sarup, President of the Association alleged that certain B.S.F. officials had prevented Gurdev Singh from meeting Baba Joginder Singh, an Akali Dal leader. Ina writ petition on June 30, he further alleged that the lawyer was illegally detained at B.S.F. camp at Rode and Baghapurana and later at the Baghapurana police station. Mr. RamSarupstated that the lawyer had filed a writ petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the illegal house arrest of Baba Joginder Singh, The State had toldithe High Court that Baba was not under house arrest and that anybody including the petitioner could meet him.
Tt was on this assurance that lawyer had gone to Rode to meet Baba Joginder Singh on June 30. Mr. Gurdev Singh who released the statement has said that he was harassed by the B.S.F. officials. He was ordered by an officer belonging to B.S.F. to stand at a certain place. The lawyer said when he pointed out that the State government had assured the high court that there were no restrictions on meeting the Baba, B.S.F. official made derogatory remarks against the court and said no one was allowed to meet the Akali leader.
