CHICAGO, II:’NUMBERABLE projects to enhance the positive image of Sikhs came up before the Sangat of Chicago when Dr. JW. Spellman who is a head of the Institute of Asian Cultures at the University of Windsor, has served as an expert witness on Sikhism for the Ontario and Alberta human rights commission and is a strong voice of the Sikhs in Canada addressed the congregation on May 1, 1988 for about 2 1/2 hours.
Addressing the Sangat and answering different questions from the audience Dr. Spellman made it vividly clear that Sikhs’ identity is crisis and Sikhs should do whatever is possible to retain it. He highlighted the importance of five K’s for the Sikhs. He stressed upon the point that Sikhs must properly document the atrocities unleashed on them in Punjab or elsewhere to draw the attention of Amnesty International or human rights organizations.
Surinderpal Singh Kalra made the necessary arrangements on behalf of Sikh Religious Society of ‘Chicago for Dr. Spellman’s visit.
Later the Siropa was presented to Dr. Spellman by Harjit Singh Akali, President Sikh Religious Society of Chicago in appreciation of his sincere and devoted services to the Sikh cause.
