CHANDIGARH: Gunmen made an abortive attempt on the life of the Ferozepur Superintendent of Police (headquarters) and gunned down four people, and security forces nabbed 16 freedom fighters in Punjab during the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, a massive hunt launched ‘to nab the gunmen who shot dead eight passengers and wounded several others on the Amritsar Khemkaran train at Ruresal railway station in Amritsar district on Wednesday night has so far not yielded any success.
The Superintendent of Police, Mr. G.S. Grewal, escaped unhurt when four gunmen ambushed his car near Zira in Ferozepur district on Wednesday night. However, an escort Maruti Gypsy was damaged in the attack, the gunmen escaped when the escort party retuned fire.
Scooter borne gunmen shot dead two people at Attal village in Jalandhar district on Wednesday night. The victims were identified as Paramjit Singh and Shamsher Singh. Two others were injured in the incident.
Two unidentified persons forced entry into a den at Menlawind village in Amritsar district on Wednesday night and shot dead Dayal Singh and his wife Charan Kaur.
In separate raids, the Majitha police on Thursday arrested six persons. They were identified as Sohan Singh, Jassa Singh, Tarsem Singh, Gurmej Singh, Kulwant Singh and Harinder Singh.
After a brief encounter security forces arrested four persons suspected as Sikh freedom fighters in Hoshiarpur district on Wednesday night. They were identified as Kirpal Singh, Tarsem Singh, Harinder Singh and Gurcharan Singh. A 303 bore rifle with 10 cartridges and a 32 bore revolver were recovered.
Some unknown gunmen shot and injured Parkam Singh at Chandke in Batala police district Gurdaspur.
