WELLINGTON, May 17, (Reuter): Jeff Crowe was named today as Captain of the New Zealand cricket team for the World Cup series in India and Pakistan in October.
Crowe led New Zealand on its recent aborted tour of Sri Lanka, scoring a century in the only test played, after taking over the captaincy from the retired Jeremy Coney.
John Wright, New Zealand’s regular vice-captain, was not available for Sri Lanka because of his benefit year commitments with English county derbyshire.
New Zealand has named an experienced 20man squad to prepare for the World Cup. The only uncapped player is 23yearold middle order batsman Mark Greatbatch.
The squad includes all 14 players who were selected for Sri Lanka.
The squad is: Mark Greatbatch, Bruce Blair, Stephen Boock, Derek Sterling, Willie Watson, John Wright, Jan Smith, Ervin McSweeney, Richard Hadlee, Martin Crowe, Jeff Crowe, Andrew Jones, Phil Home, Ken Rutherford, Danny Morrison, John Bracewell, Ewen Chatfield, Evan Gray, Martin Snedden, Dipak Patel.
