NEW DELHI, India: Angry villagers hacked a boy to death after he threw water filled balloons at a girl during a festival in northern India, the Press Trust of India (PTI) said.
The boy threw the balloons at a neighbor’s daughter during the Hindu Holi festival, celebrating the arrival of spring, when revelers traditionally toss water and tinted powder at each other.
But villagers in Seika in Haryana state turned on the boy, hacking him to death. Six people were injured, two seriously, when other villagers intervened to try to stop the attack PTI said.
Some 30 people were injured in similar incidents during the Holi celebration in other areas of Haryana, PTI said.
At least 15 Holi revelers were arrested in New Delhi, police said on Tuesday.
One person was injured when police opened fire on a crowd which threw colored water on them and kidnapped a constable at Amankuda village in eastern Orissa state during the festival, a separate PTI dispatch said.
