CALCUTTA India: “The activities and utterances of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi betray a boyish arrogance and pose a great threat to Parliamentary democracy in India. He has not only strained his relations with the President of the Country but also considers himself above the Constitution. He has also bluffed the whole nation”, these were the observations made by Chief Minister of West Bengal Jyoti Basu at Meet the Press programme in Calcutta at Press Club. He said that he had met several Prime Ministers in his long political career but none could match the Rajiv Gandhi’s fraudulent recklessness and utter disregard for the intelligence of the common people.
The Prime Minister not only lied against Head of the State in Parliament but tarnished the image of the country before the comity of nations and has as yet not apologized, said Mr. Basu. In the same breath he has also been trying to mislead the electorate through his election campaign. He could not have done so if he had the slightest regard for the people for whom he is shedding crocodile tears.
Mr. Basu said that local Congress (I) leadership was totally bankrupt and shaking to face the voters. It has chosen Mr. Gandhi as their sole spokesman but he has miserably failed. He resorted to infinite lies and wishful thinking that masses would be swayed by his lies in the same way as Nazis in Germany thought of their people in general, Mr. Basu added.
