WASHINGTON, APRIL, 10, Reuter: The Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan amounts to a tremendous victory for the Afghan rebels, the Washington Post said in an editorial on Sunday.

“The announced Soviet decision to begin an expeditious withdrawal from Afghanistan is one of the major international events since World War II,” the newspaper added.

“It is. First, a tremendous victory for the Afghans, who endured fantastic losses, fought heroically and found ways to make the Soviet Behemoth terminate a savages aggressions without either defeating the resistance or ensuring the political future of the regime it invaded to sustain”

“The Soviet decision forfeits, at least for now, whatever purpose or possibility the Kremlin had of kusing Afghanistan as a station on the way to the strategic Persian Gulf”.
