PESHAWAR, Pakistan,Feb. 11, Reuter: A prominent Afghan exile intellectual, Professor Syed Bahauddin Majrooh, was shot dead on Thursday in the northwestern Pakistani town of Peshawar, his son Masood Majrooh said.
He said Professor Majrooh, 55, was killed by an unknown gunman in the evening at the office of his Afghan Information Centre (AIC) news service on the outskirts of Peshawar, capital of the North West frontier province bordering Afghanistan.
Majrooh, a former Dean of the Literature faculty of Kabul University. was found lying at the door of the office. He had been shot five or six times, his son said.
He went to Pakistan in early 1980 after the December 1979 Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan.
Majrooh, who came from the Eastern Afghan province of Kunar, had served as Governor of Kapisa province, northwest of the Capital Kabul, under ousted King Zahir Shah.
