NEW DELHL, India: Eight people, including a foreigner, have died of aids in India while at least 145 Indians are carrying the virus, newspapers reported on Sunday.
They quoted the Indian Council of Medical Research as saying the eight were among nine Indian and four foreign aids patients detected since screening started three years ago.
Two of the foreigners were Americans and had been deported, the Council said,
It said authorities had screened 57,000 people so far and found that heterosexual, not homosexual, promiscuity was the main way that Aids Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome spreads.
However, two of the 145 carriers were women who gave birth to babies carrying the virus.
India has announced plans to impose mandatory Aids tests on foreign students and tourists staying more than one month in the country.
