Chandigarh — Mr. Arjun Singh, the new Governor of Punjab, on Thursday said his foremost task would be to usher in ‘‘total normalcy and peace”’ in the state in accordance with the wishes of the Prime Minister, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi.
Answering questions at a news conference soon after having been sworn in as the Governor, the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister said he would try to achieve this objective with involvement and cooperation of all sections in the state.
Asked if he planned to restore popular government in the state, Mr. Arjun Singh said restoration of a popular government was desirable in a democratic set up, but such a government went along with normalcy.
To the question if he was seized of the law and order problem in Punjab, the Governor said, “Law and order is not a problem to be handled.”
