Gurbir S. Grewal: Sikh Identity, Public Service, and Leadership in America

Gurbir S. Grewal is one of the most distinguished Sikh Americans in contemporary public life. Raised in New Jersey as the son of Punjabi Sikh immigrants, he rose through education, determination, and public service to become the first Sikh American attorney general in any U.S. state.

As Attorney General of New Jersey, and later as Director of the Division of Enforcement at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Grewal held positions of immense public responsibility. Throughout his career, he demonstrated that professional excellence, ethical leadership, and a visible Sikh identity can stand together with confidence.

His turban did not prevent him from reaching the highest levels of American law enforcement; it became a powerful symbol of representation, courage, and belonging. His life reminds young Sikhs that they do not have to surrender their identity to succeed. Through education, integrity, discipline, and service to others, they too can become leaders in law, government, business, education, medicine, and every other field of American life.
