We the friends and family of Harpal Singh Gosal, hereby make a plea for his safe return to Canada. Missing since December 31, 1994. we have grave concerns for his life, as we fear that he is being tortured by Indian police. Harpal S. Gosal, a Canadian Citizen and a resident of Rexdale, Ontario had left for India to visit his two daughters who study at a private school in Anandpur-Sahib. Punjab. He departed Toronto on December 29,1994. Upon his arrival in New Delhi on December 31st, he was picked up by a relative for the journey to Punjab. Witnesses have confirmed that during a stop at Phagwara. Punjab between 2:00 to 3:00 pm on December 31st. he was forcibly taken away by a number of police officers. Harpal S. Gosal’s present where abouts arc not known. The Canadian High Commission and family members have not been successful in locating him, let alone visiting him. We wish to have his whereabouts made known to us immediately. We are concerned that previously Canadian Citizens have been detained in India for prolonged periods without charges and have been subjected to inhumane tortures. Canadians who had been detained in India in the late 1980s had been subjected to harsh physical torture which included cane-beatings, rolling heavy logs on their legs, electric shocks and pulling legs apart until the pelvis was nearly ruptured. Harpal S. Gosal runs an independent business operating Dump-Trucks. Lie is a respected member of the local community. His family asks all Canadians to join them in praying for his safety and early return to Canada.
