STOCKTON CA: The following is the text of a letter from Congressman Gary Condit,
“As you may know, the government of India has not cooperated with human rights organizations such as Amnesty International, that wish to enter the country to evaluate the treatment of its people, For this reason, this session I am again a co-sponsor of H.R. 953, legislation introduced by Congressman Dan Burton (IN) which addresses this issue.
“H.R. 953 would terminate U.S. development assistance programs to India as long as the government prevents human rights organizations from visiting in order to monitor the conditions of that region. I believe that this legislation is crucial because visas to human rights monitors continue to be denied by the government of India, while human rights violations persist. I am very concerned about the treatment of Sikhs in India and want to ensure their well-being.
Please know that will continue to work with my colleagues here in Washington to see that this legislation does indeed become law.
