TORONTO: Sikh Lawyers met here last week and organized to oppose the rectification of the proposed Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty between India and Canada, The meet was organized to honor D,S, Gill, Chairman, International Human Rights Organization (IHRO) based in Punjab and also the Presidium Member of the Punjab Sikh Lawyers Council (PSLC), who is on his human rights tour to Canada and USA.
While urging to need to collectively take up local human rights issues including the proposed treaty with Canada Government and its parliamentarians, the lawyers formed a body by the name Sikh Lawyers Association of North America (SLANA).
Manjit Singh Mangat, who is also a Justice of Peace in Canada, has been appointed Convenor while Satjiwan Singh Khalsa (New York), Narinder Singh Kang (Vancouver) and Barjinder Singh Mangat (Calgary) work alerted CoCanvelaea Whereas H.S. (Harry) Mann, Bhupinder Singh Somal and Ms. Ramanjit Kaur Grewal will be General Secretary, Coordinator and Secretary respectively, And Parvinder Singh Saund and Surinder Singh Binepal will work as Joint Secretary and Secretary (Finance).
- Gill apprised the lawyer activists of the current political and human rights situation in India with special reference to Punjab. Manjit Singh Mangat who chaired the meeting, assured their all help to the IHRO North, America Chapter.
The SLANA thanked their guest lawyer activist from India for taking up the cudgels against the Extradition Treaty and paying special visit to Canada for this purpose.
