JALANDHAR: The Shiromani Akali Dal (Manjit) has decided to withdraw three of the four candidates it had put up for the Lok Sabha elections from Punjab.
Senior vice president of the party, Sarabjit Singh Jammu, told reporters here last week that the party had decided to withdraw its candidates in favor of the candidates of the Joint Panthic Front. Except for Harminder Singh Gill who is contesting on the party ticket from Taran, the remaining candidates namely Jaswinder Singh Parmar from Hoshiarpur, Pyara Singh from Ropar and Sarabjit Singh Sohal from Amritsar will not contest the elections. He said that a decision to this effect had been taken at a meeting of the Dal with the Panthic Front. ‘Sohan Singh who is contesting election from Patiala parliamentary constituency as an independent candidate announced his retirement from contest here last week. The district returning officer, Jagpal Singh Sandhu, after taking an undertaking to this effect gave instructions for withdrawal of security facilities to him. O.P. Singh, an independent candidate contesting from the Amritsar parliamentary constituency has retired from the contest.
