CHANDIGARH:  Twenty people including eight militants and o police constable, were among 20 persons killed in Punjab since Sun day night

Eleven militants were nabbed with some arms and ammunition in the state during the same period

An unidentified militant was killed while his accomplices escaped to Pakistan in an encounter with the BSF in the Bhiki wind sector of Indo-Pak border.

A border security force (BSF) press release at Jalandhar said one AK-S6 Chinese assault rifle, two magazines, one pistol rod, thirty feet codex, five feet safety fuse and some Cartridges were recovered at the site of encounter.

The police arrested three persons of a gang which has been extorting money from people by writing threatening letters in Patiala district. Three more militants were also arrested in the same district and some and some arms and ammunition were recovered from them.

Militants looted about Rs 27,500 from the state electricity board office in Jalandhar Monday.

Twenty two people, including 11 militants, were killed and four militants arrested on Feb 16.

Five men trying to enter India from Pakistan were killed in an encounter with the BSF near the border post of Ranian in Ajnala sector Friday. They were carrying a large cache of arms and ammunition, including a machine gun and 19 packets of explosives

In another encounter Saturday an unidentified militant was killed near Bahminwala village under Patti police station

Two more unidentified Pakistani intruders were shot dead in Fazilka sector of the Indo-Pak border.

Two militants shot dead Gurnam Singh, a former head of Varangpur village, at the local Dadumajra housing colony. Police immediately launched a combing operation and spotted one of them on the outskirts of Lalsora village. On being surrounded, the militant, Bhai Bharpur Singh, shot himself in the head and died instantly. A revolver with three empty and three live cartridges was found at the spot.

Meanwhile, the state chief secretary, Tejendra Khana, said that the Punjab government had drawn up a programme to launch a “peace mobilization campaign” from February 20 to April 13 to promote communal harmony in the state.

Three militants, including Bhat Sukhdev Singh alias Sukha of the KCF opened fire on a BSF patrol party near Mehma Bhagwana village in Bhatinda district. The BSF men fired back killing Bhai Sukha while the others escaped, police said

A police spokesman said that Sukha was wanted in connection with over 50 cases

During a search operation in the Sultanwind locality of Amritsar city, security forces surrounded two militants. They tried to escape but were arrested, police said adding that they consumed poison and died. Police said here a former constable-turned-militant, Narinder Singh, was killed in an encounter near Hayatpur village in Ropar district. A revolver and some car (ridges were recovered from the spot.

Fourteen militants were among 18 persons killed in Punjab Feb 17. Over the week 87 persons lost their lives.

Four militants were arrested while three persons were abducted by militants from different parts of the state during the period, police said.

Five militants, wearing police uniforms, raided the children jail in Amritsar city and freed two under trial boys.

Two militants of the KCF, wanted in a number of cases, were killed in an encounter with security forces in Tarn Taran district. Three other militants were killed in separate encounters in the district.

In Amritsar, one village chief was shot dead by militants, one militant was killed and two militants were killed in separate encounters with security forces.

Another 13 persons were killed in Punjab since Wednesday overnight while the state government Thursday announced its plan to launch a 52-day give Chance to Peace campaign in the border district of Amritsar.

The killed included four security men and four militants. Elsewhere in the state, six militants were arrested and more than Rs 170,000 robbed from two offices of the Punjab and Sind Bank during the period.

The campaign will begin with an all-party rally and march from the historic Jallian wallah Bagh on February 20. The campaign would end with the celebration of the anniversary of the 1919 Jallian walah Bagh massacre on April 13.

Three militants were killed in an encounter near village Cheharta in Amritsar district. Two of their accomplices escaped. One AK-96 telescopic rifle with two magazines and some cartridges were recovered from the encounter scene, police said. Militants, fighting for an independent homeland, opened fire on the guards of a Punjab and Sind Bank branch in Sail Ware village in Bhatinda district killing two of them and injuring another, the militants escaped with a self loading rifle, a rifle and a walkie talkie set belonging to the guards.

A police constable was killed when militants opened fire on a patrol party on being intercepted near Mannwala village in Majitha district.

Militants opened fire on the occupants of a car near Phida village in Ferozepur district injuring three of them. Two of the victims succumbed to their injuries later, police said.

CHANDIGARH: The Telecommunication Departments scheme for “instant telephone” drew huge crowds at the office of the Commercial Officer in Sector 18.

For about 100 telephones that the department will release under this scheme, thousands of people thronged the office for obtaining the necessary forms.

The department closed its grill gate to prevent the crowd from entering its office.

Under the scheme each applicant is required to pay Rs 30,000, apart from the usual installation charges.
