CHANDIGARH: At least 70 people, including eight members of a family, were killed in Punjab since June 11, Police said here.
Armed men intruded into the house of a retired army man, Kashmira Singh, in Tharinde in Ferozepur district and fired at the sleeping family killing eight members and wounding seven, the police said.
Kashmira Singh was not at home.
In an encounter in village Roore wala in Tarn Taran, five men and two security men were killed early police said. A Large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from. The spot.

The two men belonging to the Bhindranwale Tiger Force of Khalistan were killed in an encounter with the National Security Guards near village Raniwala in Tarn Taran in Amritsar district. Three of their accomplices fled.
Two AK-4 7rifles, two magazines and more than 300 cartridges were recovered from the site of the encounter scene. Police said Terrorists raided the house of a retired police officer of the Punjab Police in Batala town in Gurdaspur district and shot dead four members of his family and one maid servant.
The officer, DSP Rashpal Singh, was not present. His wife two sons, a daughter in law and a maid servant were killed.
A Punjab police officer was shot dead in Chander on village of in Amritsar district.
Police said the Assistant Sub Inspector was kidnapped from Tam Taran Saturday night and later killed. His body bore signs of torture.
In another incident, armed men kidnapped two persons from Kotla Suba singh in Gurdaspur district and shot them dead some distance away.
They also shot dead a Tonga puller near Manan village in Amritsar district, the victim had been missing for the last two days.
The Amritsar police picked up a bullet riddled body of an unidentified youth from village Thotian under Jandiala police station.
Another body was recovered from the fields of village Mana under Jhabbal police station.
Eighteen persons including four militants and a head constable were killed in separate incidents on July 14.
Meanwhile, the district police chief of Batala district escaped an attempt on his life near Sainwala in Amritsar district Saturday when ambushed His gunman was, however, seriously injured in the attack.
Gunmen shot dead eight persons, including a woman, and injured 13 others at a dera (religious place) in village Delri Kalan in Patiala district.
Four militants fired indiscriminately on people who had gathered at two deras in close proximity.
