DHAKA, Dec 31, Reuter; Thirty-three dock workers were killed when an explosion wrecked two barges in the southern Bangladesh port of Chittagong on Saturday, port officials said.

They said a huge fire destroyed the vessels on which the victims had been working. Rescuers later recovered three bodies from the wreckage.

Police said they were still investigating the cause of the explosion, the latest in a series of disasters in Bangladesh this year.

Last week at least 200 people drowned when a ferry sank in the Dhaleswari River near Munshiganj town in central Bangladesh.

Floods in August and September killed 3,000 people and another 5,000 perished in a cyclone on November 29.
