IMPHAL: Seven security force jawans and two underground Nagas were killed in fierce predawn gun battle on the Manipur Nagaland border the police said.

The encounter ensued when underground National Socialist Council of Nagaland guerrillas attempted to storma Border Security Force post near Laini Bridge in Ukhrul district.

The hostile fired from machine guns and self-loading rifles from all directions, killing seven jawans on the spot and injuring 10.

Two Assam Rifles jawans belonging to the 14th Battalion had ‘come to the BSF post on Thursday night died in the attack.

Getting over the initial shock, the jawans took up position and fired back killing two NSCN hostile including “Captain” Ramkhating who carried an Rs one lak award on his head.

The guerrillas carried away arms and ammunition including the LMGs and SLRs from the deceased jawans.

The NSCN “captain” was responsible for the killing of former Chief Minister Yangmasho Shaiza at Imphal in 1984.
