LAGOS, NIGERIA: A military transport plane crashed into a swamp shortly after takeoff from Lagos, and all 163 Army Officers, relatives and crew members on board were killed, the government said in a statement Sept.27.

The U,S.-made C-130 Hercules crashed last Saturday night but was not discovered until late next morning, when bodies were found floating in the swamp in a village about 12 miles outside Lagos, sources said.

The cause was not immediately known. Defense Minister Sani Abacha ordered an investigation.

An initial report from the military said 200 people had been on board.
