CHANDIGARH: Twelve top playing nations will vie for honors in the 1990 World Cup Hockey Tournament to be held from February 12 to 23 at National Hockey Stadium Lahore, It will be sponsored by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
According to a Pakistan Urdu national daily, NawaIWagt the second artificial turf will be ready well ahead of the World Cup, A sum of Rs 106 million will be spend for the construction of the second practice pitch which is essential for holding World Cup.
In the 1990 World Cup the hosts will provide free hospitality to the participants on the lines of Champions Trophy. PIA would be main sponsors. The airline would arrange for either more sponsors or mectall the financial demand itself. Traveling board and lodging of participants would be done by the PIA.
The Pakistan Hockey Federation has prepared a skeleton programme and presented it to the FIH Council meeting. Pakistan, Argentina, West Germany, Australia, England, USSR, and Spain have already qualified for the 1990 World Cup while the remaining teams would be the five teams of the InterContinental Cup being held at Maddis (United States) from July 5 to 6.
Participating teams of the Inter Continental Cup are Pool “A” Canada, Ireland, Malaysia, USA, Zimbabwe, Netherlands, Pool “B” Egypt, New Zealand, Poland, India, Chile, France.
During the 12 day world cup four matches would be conducted every day.
