KATMANDU, Nepal— Three Hindus found guilty of converting to Christianity were sentenced to ‘one year in prison by a court in Nepal, the world’s only Hindu kingdom, it was reported Thursday.

The constitution declares that Nepal is a Hindu state, and Nepalese law bans converting from Hinduism to any other religion.

The sentence was announced Wednesday by the district court at Bhadrapur.

Christian sources said about 200 Nepalese are awaiting trial on charges of converting from Hinduism.

In October, police arrested two foreigners from the London based Christian organization Operation Mobilization. They are to stand trial Feb 28 on charges of “preaching Christianity and causing disturbances to Hinduism.”
