BOMBAY: Stress relief through yoga combined with modern medical treatment, based on the latest laboratory data, has a proved effective in the treatment of coronary problems, especially angina and heart attack.

This was established recently in a joint study of the yoga institute, here. The doctors said they had treated more than 200 patients with this method at cardiac camps, organised by the institute.

Dr Shah, consulting cardiologist for the cardiac camps, said “a patient suffering from angina or heart attack is usually advised to undergo coronary artery bypass surgery or by balon angioplasty, both of which carry some risk to life even coronary angiography can be fatal in an occasional case”.

Moreover, both the procedures were expensive and, quite often, had to be repeated, he said, adding “an alternative to these two procedures was sorely needed”. The real enemy of a cardiac patient is either fatty food or cholesterol, stress or hostility, but materialism, egotism, selfishness, negative emotions and all kinds of excess.

Hansa Jayadeva, wife or Dr Jayadeva, who is also a yoga expert, said that “modern medicine routinely gave the patient only tranquilisers, sleeping pills and anxiety relieving drugs for relaxation. Yoga had something concrete to offer for the mind and the body which was extremely effective and long lasting.
