CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government decided not to allow the proposed Sikh convention to be held at Anandpur Sahib on Nov 25.
The authorities in a related move, arrested several Akali leaders and activists in Punjab and Chandigarh.
Among those arrested were Simranjit Singh Mann and Tota Singh, presidents of the Mann and Longowal Akali Dals as well as G.S. Tohra SGPC chief and P.S. Badal.
A number of leaders and activists have gone underground to evade the arrest.
Leaders of various militant organisations had been invited to the convention, called to discuss Sikh affairs.
Some antinational forces have convened the convention at Anandpur Sahib, with the definite intention of announcing a subversive programme of action intended to create disruption, disorder and a situation of confrontation with the government so as to encourage the secessionist forces, A Punjab government statement said.
”The government cannot be a silent spectator to anti national activities. In view of the grave consequences of the proposed convention it has been decided not to allow it and to handle the situation firmly”. The govt is so guilty that any action by the Sikhs is seen as a threat, an Akali worker said.
