NEW DELHI, India, March 16, (Reuter): A Hindu holy man and a shopkeeper were shot dead in Punjab, the latest victim in a fight for a Sikh homeland, police said today.

The Press Trust of India news agency said Sant Kripal Das, a Hindu Mahant or holy man in the Sikh majority north Indian State was killed last night by three men at his Dera (retreat) at Wadala Johal, not far from Amritsar, the Sikh Holy City.

The agency said five men raided the premises of a shopkeeper in Faridkot district. Police said four of them stood guard while the fifth went inside and killed the shopkeeper.

There has been at least one killing in Punjab each day this month, last night’s murders bringing the toll to 56.
