CHANDIGARH: Gunmen shot down three people during the past 24 hours in Punjab.
While Gurcharan Singh of “Khalistan Commando Force,” and four others were arrested in the state.
Two gunmen shot dead Sardari Lal, a brick-klin owner, in the Sultan-wind locality of Amritsar City on Tuesday afternoon. The assailants escaped on a scooter.
A bullet-ridden body identified as that of one Mulkh Raj, a businessman was recovered from a Maruti van near Kandowal in Majitha police district (Amritsar) on Tuesday morning.
The businessman was kidnapped last Saturday. Two empties of AK-47 shells were recovered from the van.
In another incident gunmen shot dead one Amarjit Singh at Kaunke Kalan in Ludhiana district while he was coming out from a Gurdwara on Monday night.
Ferozepur police arrested Gurcharan Singh of the “Khalistan Commando Force” along with his two companions, identified as Shamsher Singh and Sukhdev Singh, from Kulgarhi village in the districts. Three revolvers and some ammunition were planted there.
Gurcharan Singh was earlier arrested on the charge of lobbing a hand-grenade on a CRPF patrol party at Dharamkot in 1984, but was subsequently released on the recommendation of the Justice Bains Committee appointed by the then Akali government.
Mr. Kaushik said 12 harbourers of militants were arrested on the basis of information provided by Gurcharan Singh.
Two militants identified as Hartaj Singh and Nirvair Singh, were arrested in Amritsar and Tarn Taran police districts respectively on Monday night. Two 32 bore revolvers were planted on them.
