NEW DELHI: Indian Hockey Federation (Red) tamed their seniors, IHF (White), 21 to lift the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru gold cup at the Shivaji stadium in the Indian capital on December 8th.
THF Red, perhaps, unfairly branded as the second string, caged their much experienced rival forwards for major part of the match after they surrendered a surprise goal in the 12th minute.
Whites shot into lead when Olympian Balwinder Singh’s reverse flick from an acute angle, off a long Pargat Singh clearance, beat goalkeeper Aloysius Edwards,
However, Reds brought parity four minutes from the breather with Harinder Singh converting their third penalty comer.
Jagdev Singh scored the match winning nine minutes after the break, converting the team’s fifth penalty comer.
Reds not only won the glittering trophy but also the unofficial bet they had with their seniors.
This is the second time two IHF teams figured in the Nehru final. The earlier occasion was in 1966 when Blues and Reds played a 11 draw to become joint winners, (PTI).
