NEW DELHI: Long distance runner Tara Singh of Punjab Police was adjudged the best athlete of the 38th All—India Police Games Sports Meet, which concluded at the Jawaharial Nehru Stadium here today.
Besides improving a meet record, Tara Singh rounded off today by claiming bronze in marathon.
In the women’s section the best athlete ‘was Orissa’s V.D. Mini, The athletics team tile was won by Central Reserve Police Force with Kerala finishing second. In the women’s section Bihar topped and was followed by CRPF and Central Industrial Security Force respectively.
The bestin games (except athletics) were BSF, CRPF and Punjab Police in that order,
The Orissa Police topped among women.
The final day was highlighted by a new meet record in the women’s 4 x 100 metres relay by the Bihar quartet of Dipali Vibha, Sarojini and L. Ekka. They clocked 51.2 seconds as against the previous record of 51.4 secs. The second place went to CRPF with 522 secs while Madhya Pradesh was third with 53.3 secs.
In the men’s section the relay was won by Kerala Police while BSF were second and CRPF third,
In the 3000 meters Shamsuddin of Central Reserve Police Force was a clear winner, He gained the lead halfway through and finished well ahead of the field. He clocked eight minutes 57.4 seconds; Sai vandass of BSF was second in the minutes 1.8 secs while Ishwar Singh (BSF) ended third in 9 min 3.4 secs.
Avtar Singh of BSF won the marathon afire a close struggle with Jeet Ram of CRPF. They finished barely a stride apart,
Artar clocked two hours 25 minutes 35 seconds. Jeet was timed 2 hours 25 minutes 36 secs. Tara Singh was slightly behind clocking 2 hours 28 min 32 secs. Twenty five runners took part in the marathon.
The closing ceremony was simple but impressive.
