Chandigarh: On the call given by All India Sikh Students Federation, strike was observed through the state in schools and colleges on December 3, 4 & 5. AISSF Convener, S. Harinder Singh Kahlon, had given the call for strike on December 3, 4 &5 to protest against the continued detention of Students and army deserters in jails. To avoid any untoward incident, Punjab government had ordered closure of all the schools and colleges in the State on these two days. But students for hours together jammed the traffic at Amritsar, Chowk Mehta, Jandiala, Baba Bakala, Batala, Jalandhar, Bhatinda, Ropar, Kapurthala, Bhagwara, Tanda, Gurdaspur, Patiala and Faridkot. There were reports of Police Student clashes from various places. At Chandigarh, police lath charged the striking students and arrested 8 Sikh young men for allegedly causing riots and attempting to murder.

At D.A.V. Jalandhar Police resorted to firing rubber bullets after lath charge and teargas failed to disperse the Sikh young men. In this clash a Deputy Superintendent of police, ten constables and about a dozen youths were injured. A truck, a motor and a jeep all belonging to the police were burnt. The State government has order enquiry into the incident. Meanwhile two persons made a murderous attack on the son a DS.P in Gurdaspur. The D.SP is considered to be on the hit list of the militants.
