SANTA MONICA, CALIF., REUTER — Two time Olympic champion Carl Lewis will compete in at least three European meetings this winter but will skip the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships, his manager said.
The 27yearold American, who won Gold Medals at 100 meters and the long jump at Seoul, also probably will miss the International Amateur Athletic Federation’s (IAAF) major outdoor competition for 1989 the Fifth World Cup in Barcelona, Spain, in September, Joe Douglas, his manager, told Reuters.
“The World Cup, to me, is a minor meet,’ Douglas said.
But Lewis will make several outdoor appearances in Europe again this summer and is considering his first competition in Australia in April “and maybe an appearance in a U.S. film.
Lewis, who is training daily in Houston, has not said when he would retire from athletics, but his friends expect him to devote more time to other interests in the coming year.
Lewis will begin his indoor season on January 28 in his hometown of Houston. He will compete in San Sebastian, Spain, on February 10, Stuttgart, West Germany, two days later and Sevilla, Spain, on February 28.
