SHARJAH United Arab Emirates Nov. 30: West Indies mowed down India with a fiery four pronged pace attack t0day and moved inexorably towards the 32000 dollar first prize in the four nation champion’s trophy cricket tournament.
The Caribbean side spurred by 62 from Skipper Viv. Richards and 58 from Gus Logie reached 198 for eight wickets in 45 overs.
Then they unleashed their fast bowler’s o skittle eight Indian batsmen for 165 and clinch a convincing victory by 33 runs despite a fighting 63 from Sunil Gavaskar.
Now the West Indies have only to beat Sri Lanka in their final match to win the 100000 dollar tournament to settle the champion of champions Sri Lanka inaugural winners of the Asia cup earlier this year look to have Tittle chance.
India the reigning world cup champions initially had the West Indians struggling with three wickets down for 43.
But a fourth wicket stand of 81 between Rirhards and Logie staved off a collapse. Richards named man of the match was in commanding form striking five fours and three sixes in his 62.
India’s hopes rested heavily on the shoulders of dashing opener Srikkanth. He hammered Malcolm Marshall for a four and a six in his second over but the West Indian speedster quickly revenge bowling Srikanth for 12.
The Indians slumped to three for 31 when wicketkeeper Jeff Dujon snapped up Raman Lamba and Dilip Vengsarkar cheaply off Anthony Gray and Winston Benjamin.
The veteran Gavaskar and the sold Azharuddin held firm for a stand of 92 for the fourth wicket. But once Gavaskar had been bowled by Gray the middle-order batting crumbled against the pace barrage and five wickets fell for a mere 38 runs.
Gray bagged the bowling honour with three for 32 from nine overs.
