NEW DELHI (PTI): Australian nonplaying captain Neale Fraser hopes to lead the Australian team into the Davis cup final for the second time in the 90’s.
The team landed here in two batches Sept.17 and left for Chandigarh Saturday by a chartered flight.
The first to reach here were Fraser, along with Mark Woodford, Todd Woodbridge, Jason Stoltenberg and a doctor.
US open finalist Wally Masur joined them later coming straight from New York.
The Indian team is already in Chandigarh for the semifinal tie which begins on Sept.24. Fraser, hoping for an “uneventful’ tie said: “He is very happy with the form of the players adding ‘I could not have been much happier at any other time.’ He said the present Australian team is much stronger than the 1987 side which lost to India.
“Then we did not have a player (Masur) ranked 16thin the world. We did not have Wimbledon doubles champions and Pat Cash played only in the doubles because of injury.”
Asked to compare the Indian team of “87 with the present one, Fraser said he thought the “87 side was much stronger.
‘Ramesh is in both. Then it was Vijay now it will be Leander.
