A Federal Court case is scheduled to take place on Jan.25, 1993 in Calgary Alberta challenging the 1990 ruling to alter the RCMP dress code to allow religious headgear at the present time the WSO. Has been granted generic intervener status. A decision to allow a broader scope of intervener status for the WSO (that would allow us to cross-examine witnesses) will be decided and handed down by the judge shortly. The WSO has also been assisting the Solicitor General in the case to defend the dress code ruling and will keep you apprised of developments.
The BC governments has occupied Sikh religious articles of faith in the Police Force however there is some confusion created by the Ministry’s Advisory Committee indicating that only replica of the Kirpan is to be allowed The WSO has taken up this issue with the Attomey General and will keep you informed.
In Ontario and BC bicycle helmet legislation is soon to be enacted this will be the next turban challenge for the WSO and the Sikh community as we hope to pursue exemptions for Sikhs. Please make sure you check your local regulations!
