NEW DELHI India — Police fired into the air Tuesday evening to disperse Hindus and Moslems battling in a neighborhood of New Delhi’s old walled city police said.
Police said groups of Hindus and Moslems exchanged volleys of bottles and rocks in the Lal Kuan area after celebrations marking the Moslem religious festival of Muharrum. Authorities said they do not know what sparked the clash and no injuries were reported.
Officers trying to disperse the crowds fired into the air to clear the streets police said.
Authorities moved up to 6:30 p.m. from 7 p.m. a curfew imposed Sept. 7 on some old city areas following communal violence that has left one person dead and several injured.
