SHIVDEY SINGH, son of Dr. Gurdial Singh and Sardarni Tej Kaur, was born at Barnala and belongs to Sidhu (Brar subcaste which is most prominent and dominant one in that region of the State) family, Shivdev began his education at Nabha and the Government College of Ludhiana. An accomplished athlete, he was the Indian Intervarsity Champion in Javelin throw and runner up in discus. He was awarded the Roll of Honor in Athletics from two colleges as well as his medical school and was also the Punjab University color holder.
Dr. Singh passed his MBBS in 1958 at the Medical College of Patiala where he was President of the Student Union. He was trained as a surgeon at the Medical College of Amritsar and the Post Graduate Institute of Chandigarh. After receiving an MSS. in surgery from Punjab University, he specialized in Pediatric Surgery as a resident and research fellow at Children’s Hospital of the Harvard Medical School. Further expertise as a surgeon was obtained in England, France, and Spain.
He is Board certified in General and Pediatric Surgery from America and Canada and is member of several national and international surgical societies. He is presently a staff surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and several other area hospitals.
As past President of the Sikh Council of North America and trustee of the Guru Nanak Foundation of Silver Springs, Md., he has been active in Sikh community affairs. He enjoys reading, painting, playing guitar, and travelling abroad.
