NEW DELHL, July 4, Reuter: Seven people were killed today in continuing violence in India’s Punjab State.
Police said two freedom fighters were killed in an exchange of fire with security forces in Jullundur district. They said two other people were killed when a police patrol fired at a group moving in “suspicious circumstances”.
Unknown assailants gunned down the proprietor of a cooking gas store and two customers, they said.
Police recovered the unidentified body of an eighth victim in a gutter in Amritsar district, bringing the death toll in Punjab over the last four days to 20.
Police said they had arrested 21 people, including 13 they described as freedom fighters and seized arms and ammunition.
Sikhs are fighting for an independent nation carved out of the northern state.
