NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court fast week issued notices to the director-general of Punjab police the state government and in charge of the Gurdaspur police Station on a petition by a widow, Mrs. Charanjit Kaur, alleging that her husband bad been illegally detained, tortured and killed in a “false encounter Seven months ago.

It was alleged that a police party headed by SHO, Pritam Singh, forcibly wok away Balwinder Singh, about 30 years old from his village Khanowal house on January 3 last. “No case was registered against Balwinder Singh yet he was detained in the police lock up for 21 days. He was tortured and later killed in the custody. The police however said Bal winder and three others were killed in.an encounter on the night of January 24.

 After Balwinder Singh’s death the police brought hits body to tie: village and cremated it amidst tight security. The police did not allow any resident of the village to attend the midnight cremation. Balwinder Singh’s aged father, wife and child were present when his body was cremated, said the petition.
