Dear Editor,

I am writing to urge all Californians to vote NO on Proposition 188.

Prop 188 is financed by millions of cigarette industry dollars, especially Philip Morris Inc. That alone should tell any voter that Prop 188 is intended to benefit the cigarette industry.

If you like to have cigarette smoke or cigar smoke blown in your face in public places, then vote YES on Proposition 188.

All of the slick and phony brochures sent to California voters urging YES votes on Prop 188 are like foxes masquerading in sheep’s clothing. Those brochures have been financed by millions of cigarette industry dollars.

Prop 188 is intended to prohibit local city councils and Boards of Supervisors from enacting NO SMOKING ordinances to affect public places in their own cities and towns.

The slick brochures were sent to us by a group called “CALIFORNIANS FOR STATEWIDE SMOKING RESTRICTIONS — YES ON PROPOSITION 188 A Committee of Caledonia Hotels, Restaurants, Philip Morris Inc., and other tobacco companies.”

“Statewide Smoking Restrictions” means only the California Legislature could pass NO SMOKING laws. The cigarette industry knows they can prevent passage of any such laws in the California legislature.

Prop 188 seeks only to handcuff all city councils regarding the enactment of NO SMOKING laws and ordinances.

I will vote NO on Proposition 188.
