JOHANNESBURG: A spokesperson for the Africa desk of the Indian external affairs ministry has been quoted her as saying that India will not review her trade and investment sanctions against South Africa until it is satisfied a fully-elected govt is at hand.
The unnamed spokesperson’s comments were published in the Johannesburg-based govt-supported citizen newspaper on Wednesday.
Using the South African Press Association (SAPA) is its source the Citizen quoted the Indian official as saying that until the perceived changes towards a nonracial democratic order are irreversible India will not review its position on sanctions
The institutional structures of apartheid are still in place the Indian official was quoted as saying.
However the official is quoted as saying that India no longer maintained a comprehensive ban on contact with South Africa.
The Citizen newspaper said the Indian official cited the recent breakthroughs in revival of sports and cultural ties with South Africa.
As part of its revised approach on selective boycotts India proposed South Africa’s re-admission to the international cricket conference in London last week newspaper said.
