NEW DELHI: The Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha Wednesday met the finance minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and stressed the need for an immediate package of financial assistance for the state.

A state government press release said the chief minister highlighted the difficult financial position that her new government had to face and stressed that the center should cover the opening deficit and also the revenue loss on account of prohibition.

She pointed out that the central investment in Tamil Nadu was declining and wanted it to be looked into. She also urged the finance minister to use his good offices for the early clearance of the national aromatics project and the Neyveli first mine expansion and associated thermal stations of 420 mw.

The release said Jayalalitha stressed the need for early clearance of the third mine cut project at Neyveli.

She also wanted the southern gas pipeline project to be expedited.
