SRINAGAR, __ INDIA, AUG. 16; REUTER — Police in India’s northern state of Jammu and Kashmir opened fire on Tuesday to disperse pro Pakistan demonstrators in the second day of riots in Srinagar, the state capital.
Hospital sources said 23 people, including 10 policemen, were injured.
The trouble began on Monday, the 41st anniversary of India and Pakistan’s independence from Britain.
At least 70 people were hurt when hundreds of militant students shouting proPakistan slogans staged daylong riots.
Kashmir, India’s only Muslim majority state is claimed by Pakistan which occupies about a third of its territory and wants a referendum on its future.
India has consistently refused this demand and despite two wars and many border clashes the issue remains unresolved.
