ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Mohammad Khan Junejo clearly reflected the national will when he declared his resolve to bring Siachin back into the orbit of Pakistani control. Equally important, he has spoken loud and clear about retrieving the Kashmir issue from under the carpet where it had been relegated. Though this enunciation is noticeably different from the timid stance we have maintained towards India over the past few years, it is in line with the Muslim League position as spelt out last January.

India has a track record of unpunished aggression against Pakistan and all her neighbors. Every peace treaty has been violated by India; the 1971 Indian invasion after Tashkent, and the Siachin takeover after the Simla Accord Besides its direct interference and suspected funding of political elements in Pakistan; it is now being accused by Bangladesh of fomenting trouble in a land which they supposedly liberated in 1971. India’s hegemonistic designs and ambitions in the region are being pandered to by both superpowers that see it as a potential surrogate, Evidence of this is available in the Indian role and posturing on the Afghan issue and other problems affecting the Muslim world. The peace offensive launched by Pakistan has only earned it a bruised nose. The lessons of that must be learnt and incorporated in official policy.
