NEW DELHI: India’s prime minister faces 10 candidates, including a Right Wing BJP nominee in Nandyal constituency, as nominations for the mid-November by elections to the lower house of parliament and state assembly closed.
Eight candidates, including BJPs Bangaru Laxman, filed their nomination papers in Nandyal, in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, on when last day of filing in the constituency Friday.
Not being a member of either house when he was sworn-in prime minister, Rao has to, under the constitution, be elected to the lower house with six months of assuming office.
Rao was elected leader of Congress-I party, which emerged majority party following general elections in May this year.
Besides the prime minister, prominent personalities who have entered the fray in various states so far included defense minister Shared Pawar in Baramati, Capt. Satish Sharma (Congress) in Amethi, and film stars Rajesh Khanna (Congress) and Shatrughan Sinha (BJP) in New Delhi Lok Sabha (lower house) constituencies.
