New Delhi: Addressing a convention of the industrialists and businessmen, the Indian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi talked about the urgency of controlling the dangerously swelling population. He indicated that the program launched by his volatile brother, late Sanjay Gandhi, during the emergency to control population, has to be reactivated with full earnestness and determination.
Sanjay had resorted to compulsory sterilization (Nasbandi) and in the process alienated the masses. Congress (I) defeat in 1977 Parliamentary election was mainly due to this ruthless policy of Sanjay Gandhi. In view of this Rajiv Gandhi is likely to proceed more cautiously and diplomatically to check the multiplying multitudes in India.
