CALCUTTA: Mr. Thanga Vellu Rajeswarawas on Thursday sworn in as the Governor of West Bengal The oath of office was administered by the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Mr. Justice P. D. Desai at the Raj Bhavan,
Mr. Rajeswar is the 13th Governor of West Bengal and the seventh since the Left Front assumed. Power in 1977. He succeeds Prof. Saiyid Nurul Hasan (198689) who has been transferred to Orissa.
The Governor, whose appointment had kicked off a controversy with the ruling party suspecting political motivation behind it, however refrained from making any comment. His only reply was, “Let me settle down first.”
Mr. Rajeswar is the first Governor from the Indian Police Service. He joined the service in 1949 and belonged to the Andhra Pradesh cadre where he served till 1949 before being transferred to the Intelligence Bureau in Delhi. He retired as its director in 1983. He also served as the Lieutenant Governor of Arunachal Pradesh before taking over as the Governor of Sikkim.
