ROPAR: The Punjab government would soon hand over the maintenance work of some selective roads to Private agencies on experimental basis to improve the condition of roads in the state.
This was disclosed by P. Ram, secretary, Public Works Department (B&R) Punjab, while addressing a press conference at the local canal rest house March 9th. He was here to review the work of the PWD (B&R) department with other senior officers of the department.
He said that there would be no compromise on the quality of work in the department at any cost and he would also try to get all ongoing works completed within the scheduled time. Ram said that the government was spending Rs 20 crores for the construction of bridges on the national highway and roads in the state during the current financial year. Under the first phase of the program the government would get over bridges on the railway lines constructed. Bridges would be constructed on Siswan River on Ropar Nurpur Bedi road in this district, so the road could be used in all weather. He further said that the department had undertaken the repair work of about 7,000 km long rural link roads this year which would be completed soon. ‘Vini Mahajan, deputy commissioner, requested the secretary to start the work of four learning of the Chandigarh Ropar national highway and ring roads near Ropar town for which the government had sanctioned Rs 1 crore.
