OTTAWA: The Onawa Heart Institute artificial heart, which works without being attached to machinery outside the body. Unlike the Jaruik mechanical heart, the new heart is designed to last a patient’s life time. Testing of the new heart began recently and long-term animal studies must still be done, Human trials are expected to start in 1996.
