By Colleen Beaumier, Liberal Candidate for Brampton

On Aug.11, we had a campaign kickoff for the riding of Brampton. It was a fund raiser for the election and once again the Asian community was there in full force. Sheila Copps, (deputy leader of the Liberal Party) was my guest.

I met Sheila in 1983. The Provincial Liberal Party was in the process of a leadership race and as president of the Liberal Association I wanted to have all of the leadership candidates come to Brampton to give local Liberals a chance to make up their own minds. Sheila Copps was too young to be leader and obviously too outspoken. She would obviously be the wrong choice. Enter Sheila Copps. Young she was, but her style and her ideas could never be mistaken for anything but common sense. Her candid search for truth, her love for humanity and her

Unpolished wisdom suddenly made her appear much older, but I was already pledged to another candidate.

Over the years my respect for Sheila has grown. She has been an inspiration to many as she fights onward for the causes of mankind. A Liberal believes that we must take care of people in our society who are unable to care for themselves and at the same time, we must protect and encourage those who carry the financial burden of doing this.

The Conservatives believe that it is survival of the fittest. Witness. Cuts to seniors pensions. They have had eight years to cut their own pensions and double dipping; instead they have chosen to cut seniors. Foreign made helicopters instead of daycare for children of poor families who want to earn their own way in life. band aid solutions in Bosnia instead of a strong voice in the United Nations against the atrocities being committed there and elsewhere in the world..$10,000,000.00 spent on a study showing the extent of violence against women while they are cutting back on monies to the province, thus forcing shelters for these women to be limp along with inadequate funding. These are only a few examples of what we can expect in the future if we elect them once again to run the country. Oh yes, and if you think that none of these things affect you directly, wait until you want to have your aging mother or grandmother to come for a visit and her visa is denied because some policy directed bureaucrat decides that she is a risk to the economy as she may decide to stay in Canada. That my friends are already happening and it won’t get any better.

Well now that many of you have ‘put your money where your mouth is,’ it’s time to spread the word.

Tainted tuna and a week position for the fishing industry on the east coast have been their record. I have been told that fish is brain food. Do you think that may be part of their sinister plot to get reelected?
