COLOMBO: A senior minister in the Ranasinghe Premadass cabinet, Thondaman, has sent a “fresh peace package” to Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) supreme Velupillai Prabhakaran in an attempt to find ‘an acceptable solution to the country’s ethnic problem and an end to the ongoing war in the islands northeast.
Thondaman in his capacity as the president of the Ceylon workers Congress (CWC representing the plantation Tamils of Indian origin has sent a letter through the international committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) officials.
His letter containing the peace package was sent in the first week of this month prior to his departure to India on an unofficial tour during which the CWC leader met with Prime Minister P.V Narasimha Rao.
Declining to give details of his fresh peace package, Thondaman told PTI Wednesday it would be “premature” to divulge the con- tens of the solution he had suggested.
He said he was expecting a response from the LTTE leader within a month.
The LTTE’S chief spokesman ‘Anton Balasingham had told a group of journalists in Jaffna in August that the LTTE would accept Thondaman as mediator between the government and the militants if the CWC leader was prepared to go to Jaffna for peace talks.
